Unlocking the Secrets of Formalin Fix (12th Oct 23 at 4:37am UTC)
IBio Specimen
Formalin Fixed Paraffin Embedded (FFPE) blocks may not be a household term, but they play a critical role in the world of pathology and medical research. These unassuming blocks are like time capsules, preserving tissue samples for decades. In this post, we will delve into the world of FFPE blocks, exploring their significance, preparation, and applications in the field of medicine and science.

The FFPE Process: What is it?

FFPE blocks are the end result of a widely used method to preserve tissues for future analysis. The process typically involves taking a small tissue sample, usually from a biopsy or surgical specimen, and immersing it in formaldehyde (formalin). This fixative helps to halt the natural decomposition of tissue and preserves its structural integrity.

Once the tissue has been fixed, it is dehydrated through a series of alcohol washes. Then, the tissue is embedded in paraffin wax, which provides support and protection. The final product is a small block of tissue encased in paraffin, ready for storage and long-term preservation.
